Telephone Job Interviews-Tips to prepare for a winnng telephone job interview!
As recently as 15 years ago the phone interview was used rarely in the recruitment process. Today company recruiters use the phone interview as an essential tool in winnowing the list of qualified candidates to a short list of candidates to be invited in for a face-to-face interview.
The phone interview should be approached differently from the face-to-face meeting as what you say and how you say it will become vital in moving to the next level. Keep that in mind as you prepare for winning the phone interview. Here are some tips to help in your preparation:
Focus on the phone interview. Get rid of all the distractions. Turn off the cell phone and computer. If you get a call for the phone interview and the time is not convenient, reschedule it for a better time.
Treat the phone interview as if you were looking the person on the other end of the line directly in the eye. Pay attention as if the person were in the room with you. Smile when you talk and be sure there is energy in your voice. If necessary practice the interview with a friend. Tape and critique the conversation. Do it until you get it right and you are comfortable with your performance. An interesting tip: Remain standing during the telephone interview. Normally this will give you more energy in your voice.
Clearness counts. Keep from rambling. Stick to the point. Make sure you have properly heard and understand the question. If unclear ask for clarification.
What are the two or three critical skills required for the position? In your interview preparation put together a short powerful response directly addressing each required skill. Weave these answers into the conversation. It might be a short story illustrating your ability or reference to your proficiency to achieve planned results.
Overall preparation is the key. Since the telephone interview is designed to screen you out
you must make every attempt to connect with the interviewer. On way to do this is to prepare in advance what questions you might ask when prompted by the interviewer.
You do not want the telephone interview to be conducted so you spend the entire time simply answering questions. If so you will miss opportunities to deliver key points relative to how you skills match what is required by the employer. Prepare examples, stories and anecdotes that back up how your skills and abilities would be a good fit for the position.
Your goal should be to be personable, friendly and be able to relate to the interviewer. For example, questions you might ask include: What are the one or two top challenges in the position? Carefully listen to the answer and then respond with a short example where you faced similar challenges at another position and achieved excellent results. You should have a list of 3 to 7 questions of this nature with short responses to the answer received that reflect favorably on your abilities and strengths.
With this preparation for the phone interview you should sail through to the next level. Build on what you learned in the phone interview to prepare for a winning face-to-face interview. Can there be a job offer in your future?
