It depends upon the nature of the work how long it'll take to get it right. Restaurants, for instance, are likely to require less time in the development phase than an electronic device.
Most of all, when embarking upon your self employment ideas, be sure they inspire you. Truly successful business ventures are led by people who are certain they have something other people will want. Your passion, or lack of it, will be evident in the performance of your new business.
