The Varied Nature of Self Employment Benefits
from:There are many ways to consider self employment benefits, since it's not just all about health insurance, though that is in the forefront of many people's minds when they consider embarking on a freelance adventure.
One of the largest benefits that compels many to seek the high adventure of a career in self employment are benefits of freedom that one enjoys. That means freedom from a regular time clock, freedom from dealing with co-workers you absolutely detest and freedom from subservience to an incompetent, so-called superior.
Of course, it's not all wine and roses with self employment. Benefits are offset by an entirely different set of problems. For instance, you're not only the sole benefactor of the profits but also, the sole risk taker. If things suddenly go very, very wrong (despite your best efforts), there's no cushion to fall back upon other than one you might make for yourself. As such, many people choose to work their old jobs for as long as possible while they determine just how good their ideas are.
Another one of the many self employment benefits that you have to look forward to is that you can choose the jobs that suit you best. Of course, every time you turn something down you're loosing that much money, but you do now have the ability to figure in your own personal ethics and aggravation into the equation.
While your time is free and you can schedule it as you like, you may find that all the extra hours that are required of the average startup enterprise make it unlikely that you'll be able to keep up with housework and feeling yourself, much less your usual social schedule. Though one of the unique self employment benefits means you'll be able to sleep in, you'll also be up late working, sometimes all night to make sure you leave the best possible impression upon everyone involved.
Of course, the major benefit that self employed folks almost always lack is health insurance. This is not very unusual in a country where nearly one quarter of the population lacks basic health care, but that figure is a great deal higher for freelancers. Indeed, the cost of insurance for the self employed makes it nearly impossible for anyone to do so in the first 5-7 years of any business.
As such, most people who start out in a self employment opportunity do so on a partner or spouse's insurance plan, necessitating that at least one partner continue to work, whether they like it or not. For those with children, this may even prevent them from starting on the road to self employment entirely.
Self employment benefits are very much like having six in one hand and half a dozen in the other. However, for those who like calling their own shots, it's worth it.
